Yes, this is a toilet paper holder - he thinks it's a trumpet. When he blows in one end it makes a cute little whistling sound and he marches all around the house "playing his trumpet."

A glimpse at my baby
I saw a glimpse of my baby today.
I know that 1 years old is not that far away from being a baby, but in the life of a new mom, it is.
I laid Caleb down for his afternoon nap, sure that he was going to sleep a good 2 -3 hours since he had missed his morning nap. I had gone to my MOMS group, which meant he was busy playing with the other kids in the nursery. There's no time for naps when there is playing to be had.
Well, needless to say, he only slept 20 minutes and instead of waking up in his happy little boy fashion, he was crying and upset. I went in, wiped his tears, grabbed him and his puppy, and held him as I rocked him back to sleep.
If you know Caleb, you know that he is well past the stage of wanting to be held. He'll fight us so hard on this (with the exception of an occassional Sunday afternoon with daddy under the blankets). Long gone are the days that I could hold him like this. But he just laid there, snuggling his puppy, stroking my hair, as his eyes got heavy.
As I sat there watching him fall asleep, I caught a glimpse of my baby. That baby that used to take his thumb, catch it under the collar of my shirt, and rub it against his cheek. That baby that used to be two seconds away from submitting to his exhaustion, but would open one eye, just slightly, to see if I was still there. That baby that would close his eyes if I would just take my finger and lightly rub across his eyebrows. That baby that would smile in his sleep only to make me wonder what he dreams about.
It was a great afternoon.

My little sneak
I was out in the living room putting away my many bags, coats, and hats from my morning meeting. I had put Caleb down to let him run around while I was doing this and later found him in the kitchen. I swear to you that I was only in the living room for a minute...tops. This is what he accomplished in those 60 seconds.

I'm going to have to keep my eye on this one...and get a lock for this cabinet!

Pitter Patter
For the first time since Caleb started walking, I experienced hearing that true pitter-patter of little feet walking around. This morning, I ran downstairs to get a few things for my meeting that we were running to.
I made sure that he was all secure and not going to climb up or fall down any stairs and headed down to get my stuff. As I was in the office, I heard him make his way from the living room to our tile floor in the kitchen.
Pitter-patter
Pitter-patter.
It makes me smile just thinking about it. He's growing up so fast and learning so many things. Where did this year go? How does he know to move one foot after the other? How does he know how to stand up from a sitting position? Oh the little wheels are turning...and it's pretty exciting!

Snow Daze
Is anyone else feeling a little housebound? Gabe officially had 3 days off of school because of the temperatures. It was sort of a crummy way to have off of school though. We had beautiful fluffy snow to play in, but it was too cold to go out and enjoy. Needless to say, we chose the warmest of the days, planned a 5 minute trip to the backyard (which took at least 20 minutes to prepare for, if not more) and here was the result:
Lookin' good!
I know you can't tell, but there is screaming and tears going on in this picture. He gave the snow a big thumbs down.
This is our door jam from our front door. It was so cold outside that there was actually frost built up on the inside of our door.
Being housebound meant that we finally decided to tackle cleaning out our closets. Caleb decided that he wanted to keep Daddy's cool Hawaiian shirt. (I'm sure there is a story as to why Gabe has this shirt, because thankfully, I've never seen him wear it).

Another reunion...that makes me old, doesn't it?
This past Saturday I had the pleasure of seeing a few of the ladies that I roomed with at ISU. We've been planning this weekend for awhile now, but silly us, we decided on a weekend in January in the middle of Central Illinois. Oops! So I'm sad to report that we were missing half of our clan due to bad weather. JennY and Aub, we missed seeing you and your little ones. Aub, I'm especially sad that I didn't not get to hold any little babies - I was so looking forward to it!
We were commenting over the weekend that we've known each other for 10 1/2 years. Actually, I've only known them all for 9 1/2 years. When I came to ISU, I was a sophmore. The four of them were all rooming together in Walker (may it rest in peace) 2North, while I had my triple on 1South. I met Jenny while attending a bible study in the RA's room and the rest is history. By senior year, we had found an apartment and were living it up on University. Wasn't that place so disgusting!
Anyway, just so Jen and Aub feel like they were here, here are some pics from Saturday:
JennIE, playing with Caleb (yes, we still haven't gotten a new camera).
Sara, playing with Caleb. He found two great new friends this weekend!

A Look Back
While I know that we are well on our way into 2009, I thought it might be fun to look back at what 2008 brought us and the many blessings we have just one year later.
I went on maternity leave, started a new part time job, left my full-time job a few months later, gained a beautiful neice at the end of January, our first nephew at the end of May, went to 3 showers and 3 weddings, hit the Dells for an exciting vacation in July (traveling with a 7month old is something to remember in and of itself), enjoyed a full summer with all 3 of us at home, visited friends and family, gained a whole lot of friends for Caleb (something must have been in the water), left my baby for a whole weekend for the first time, found out 4 of my friends were having babies (one was born just yesterday - congrats Leslie and Jason!), turned 32, 28 and 1, respectively and simply had a wonderful year.
God has been good to us and I'm looking forward to the blessings He has in store for us in 2009!
